Varalakshmi Pooja 2016

Varalakshmi Pooja (or Varalakshmi Vratham) is a festival to propitiate the Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Vishnu, one of the Hindu Trinity. This pooja (or Vratham) is performed by married woman for the well being of all the family members, especially husband. It is believed  that worshiping Goddess Varalakshmi on this day is equivalent to worshipping Ashtalakshmi - all the eight Goddesses of Wealth, Earth, Learning, Love, Fame, Peace, Pleasure and Strength. Goddess Varalakshmi is one who grants boons. This Hindu festival is celebrated on the Friday before full moon day - in the month  of Sravana (which corresponds to the Gregorian months of July - August).

On this occasion I wore this beautiful Kanjivaram saree from Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. These bangles are custom made in Charminar, Hyderabad and the Necklace is gifted by my Mom. It took almost a day for me to decorate the Goddess Lakshmi and set the pooja place. I offered prasadam (is a material substance of food that is a religious offering to God, which is normally consumed by the worshippers) like Pulihora (Spicy Tamarind Rice), Sweet Pongal (Sweet Rice made with jaggery), Sundal (Tempered Chickpeas), Vada (Lentil Fritters), White Rice, Sambar (Lentil Soup), Mixed Vegetable Curry, Papad and Fruits.

  3. Your outfit is gorgeous, and I love that your necklace came from your mom. I could go for some veggie curry right now, and you just reminded me I bought dates last week for a recipe. Got to go make it!
